The increase in commercial truck theft is one that truck drivers are experiencing all over the country. Every year the FBI reports that billions of dollars worth of cargo (e.g. electronics, pharmaceuticals, etc.) are stolen and the trend shows no signs of slowing down. Truck drivers are urged to take preventative measures to protect themselves and their cargo, especially if they are hauling high-end goods. Here are some practical yet effective ways to deter thieves from targeting your truck while on the road.
It may sound obvious, but never leave the truck idling with the keys in the ignition, no matter how safe or deserted the stop may seem. Even if you lock the door, knowledgeable thieves can easily bypass the lock and get in.
While on the road, keep the details of your cargo to yourself, especially if you are hauling something of high worth such as pharmaceuticals.
At truck stops, park where a lot of people can see your rig. Make sure the area is well-lit and there are other people around. Parking in a dark, deserted area makes it easier for thieves to target you and your truck undetected.
On a similar note, try to park your truck so it will be visible from where you’ll be sitting inside.
Before you head out, take the time to research the areas you’ll be driving through. Do they have a high-crime rate? Plan ahead so you can bypass them without having to stop for fuel or food. If you’re in the middle of nowhere and you’re forced to stop, make sure you are extra careful and alert for the short period you’re there.
For those with truck driving jobs that entail dedicated routes, try taking an alternative route once in awhile just so you aren’t always at the same places at the same time.
If you make it difficult for a thief to access your truck, it’s likely they’ll simply move on to an easier target. Use a vehicle protection device such as an air lock system or one that disables the ignition when the locks on the truck are forced open.
If you work as a company driver, ask if the carrier offers any solutions or preventative measures against theft for drivers carrying high-value items.
